This day in Jewish history / Ovadiah Jews - This Day in Jewish History

October 29, 1486, is the date on which the rabbinical scholar Ovadiah ben Avraham departed on the journey that took him from his native Italy to Jerusalem.
Ovadiah of Bertinoro, as he is best known, arrived in the holy city a year and a half later, on March 25, 1488. There he quickly became the acknowledged leader of the small and ailing Jewish community.

Chemical weapon inspectors unable to reach two Syrian sites

"The two remaining sites have not been visited due to security reasons," the OPCW, which won the Nobel Peace prize this month, said in a statement.
Visiting the sites has posed serious dangers for the inspectors with fighting continuing to rage in a 2-1/2 year civil war that has killed more than 100,000 people.
The location of the two remaining sites was not provided by the OPCW, but an official speaking on condition of anonymity played down their significance, saying "one is empty and the other is also otherwise not that important".

Saudi Arabia declines UNSC seat, cites failure to tackle conflicts

Saudi Arabia, in an unprecedented show of anger at the failure of the international community to end the war in Syria and act on other Middle East issues, said on Friday it would not take up its seat on the United Nations Security Council.
The kingdom condemned what it called international double standards on the Middle East and demanded reforms in the Security Council.
Riyadh's frustration is mostly directed at Washington, its oldest international ally, which has pursued policies since the Arab Spring that Saudi rulers have bitterly opposed and which have severely damaged relations with the United States, Saudi analysts have said.

Slavery reparations Blood money Pressure grows for compensation for the Caribbean trade

Britain ended its slave trade in 1807, and freed the slaves in its Caribbean colonies by 1838. The British government borrowed £20m, then around 40% of the budget, to meet 47,000 claims for loss of human property. The former slaves got nothing.
Close to two centuries on, Caribbean politicians want redress. The Caribbean Community (Caricom) which links former British colonies with Suriname and Haiti, established an official reparations commission in July and has approached a British legal firm, Leigh Day, for advice.
Among the precedents for financial reparations, West Germany and Israel signed a financial agreement in 1952, seven years on from Auschwitz. In June this year, after legal action by Leigh Day, Britain conceded payments averaging £2,600 ($4,000) each for 5,228 now elderly Kenyans who were brutally mistreated during the suppression of the Mau Mau rebellion in the 1950s. Britain’s courts will not now consider claims for atrocities occurring before 1954.
